FFD firefighters were again working on various activities over the weekend. It all started with a medical assist in the 1000 block of Centre St. and then continued all weekend. The potato cake sale took up most of the time along with an assist to the Freeland VFW Post 5010 with preparations for Memorial Day. FFD Lieutenant James “Jimmy” Darvell filled in the training component of the weekend attending a Task Force One Wreckers and Rescues Class.

FFD again provided public service to the community as the firefighters began the annual spring cleaning of Centre St. The engine and rescue shuttled water supplying two hand lines to rid the business district of the debris brought on by the always difficult Northside winter.

FFD had five firefighters attend the Beyond Sidewalk Supervision program sponsored by Luzerne County Community College Public Safety Institute. The program was instructed by Chief Floyd Wise of Combat Ready Fire Training and focused on developing a strong command culture in the fire service.

FFD held the Spring Chicken Bar B Que yesterday which again served up approximately 300 of this delicious meal. On Friday after clean up from the 3 alarm fire the firefighters went to work preparing the chicken and sides and then first thing Saturday morning getting the meals ready.

Freeland Little League started their 2022 season today under crystal blue skies. The opening ceremonies were again impressive with every player, coach, and league officer being introduced along with sponsor representatives.

FFD membership extends its appreciation to the Freeland American Legion Post 473 on its generous contribution for the purchase of new CO meters. These meters will provide firefighters with improved equipment to monitor CO in residents and businesses in our coverage area.

A little snow, a little sun, either way there was work to be done on the truck. Today FFD firefighters emptied the top storage areas of the truck and gave them a good deep clean. After a Northside winter (it’s still not leaving) getting this area clean is a definite priority.

FFD is proud to support the City of Hazleton Donations for Ukraine effort. Every Monday and Wednesday evening from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm FFD members will be manning the station accepting donations for the Ukrainian citizens who have been devastated during the attack on their country.

The meeting room was in need of some TLC so a group of members got together and decided to patch the walls and add a fresh and much needed coat of paint. After this is complete the legacy photos will get new frames and get rehung.

Making sure equipment works when it’s needed is an important component of being a firefighter. Saws and other mechanized equipment need to be checked to make sure they are ready to perform and to identify any problems.
