The Christmas Night Fire in the Alvington Section of the Boro was the result of a meth lab gone bad. Freeland Boro Police arrested an individual and various charges were filed in the Luzerne County Court System.

As usual FFD conducted its BVR refresher over the last 5 training sessions. Last night the crew worked the heavy hydraulics on door pops, roof laps, and dash rolls. The old com-a-long was also throw into action for a steering column pull.

The FFD potato cake sale was again a huge success with all of our product being sold out by late afternoon on Memorial Day. With the exception of the Sunday night thunder storm the weather was hot and the crowd, especially after the parade, was large.

During our preplan review in was determined that our large area search operations needed an upgrade. So after reviewing various products the Rock-n-Rescue search kit was purchased. It contains 100' of guide rope and four color coded 50' lengths of rope for advancement into the search area.

Tonight the troops gathered up, pulled the rigs onto the street, and proceeded to scrub the floor after our relatively mild and easy winter. Also the bays were organized along with the main storage area.

FFD has several ALPHA pagers for sale operating frequency 152.1800 MHZ. The pagers were used by our department until the conversion to voice paging mandated by our County 911. The pagers are in good operating condition and (sold as is) asking price is $75 each.

Last night Freeland Fire Department was requested to repair a flag pole and clean the memorial at the intersection of Ingham and Johnson Streets. Engine 1, Engine 2 and Ladder 57 were on location for the public service request.

Last evening FFD firefighters loaded up the truck and utility and headed for Southside Station - HFD for our annual SCBA refresher training. HFD was sponsoring a Search/Rescue Refresher so our firefighters enrolled in the class and we knocked off two sessions in one night.

FFD participated in the funeral service for Peggy Kostician with the engine in the procession and the truck forming the ceremonial arches outside of St. Mary's BC Church in the boro. Many departments participated in this very thoughtful ceremony for a very special lady.

FFD offers their sincere thoughts and prayers to the Philadelphia Fire Dept. and the families of the two LODD firefighters. Both were assigned to Ladder 10 and two other firefighters also were injured in the collapse of an exposure building which became involved in the five alarm fire.

Yesterday morning Peggy Kostician passed away at her residence on Adams St. in the boro. Peggy was the mother of Scott Kostician, Chief of Hazle Twp. Fire and Rescue and a member of FFD. She was a very helpful and caring individual and assisted any who requested her help.
