As is department tradition the haunted hayride was sponsored by FFD with over 300 people participating. The hayride starts off quietly enough at the station with a nice leisurely ride to the Freeland Public Park.

Again this past week provided a busy training period for FFD firefighters. Asst. Chief Engineer Larry Stepansky and his son, junior firefighter Larry Jr., are in the process of completing the Exterior Firefighter portion of Essentials at LCCC/PSTI.

Freeland Fire Department conducted three fire prevention programs at the Freeland Senior Apartment buildings today. Fire Safety in the kitchen and evacuation procedures were covered and the majority of the residents attended the programs.

This evening FFD and Valley Regional firefighters attended the 10th. Annual Valley Preferred Spirit of Courage Awards Ceremony at Coca-Cola Park in the Lehigh Valley. The event is to celebrate the first responders who have performed courageously during emergency incidents during the past year.
Tonight Freeland Firefighters Bill Kuklis, Dan Bobby, Donna Karosa and Theresa Karosa presented a fire prevention program to the local crime watch meeting held in the Active Adult Center on Washington Street.

On Saturday Freeland Fire Department and White Haven Fire Department held their Annual Family Picnic at the Freeland VFW Grove. A large attendance of both fire departments Firefighters and their families attended they enjoyed all the homemade foods ,deserts and games.

This weekend involved two separate fund raising events for the members of the department. On Saturday, FFD sold potato cakes at the Mayor's Car Show held in the Freeland Public Park. The bleenies are always a crowd favorite and were again a hit with the attendees.

On what has become an annual tradition, the White Haven/FFD outing will be held on Saturday, October 3, at the Freeland VFW Grove in the Brickyard. The event has grown from humble beginnings to a festival of food and fun.

FFD is again conducting the Annual Fund Drive in Freeland and Jeddo Boroughs. Below is the release which lists the purpose of this year's effort. ~~For over 125 years the Freeland Fire Department, along with its predecessors the Citizens Hose Co.
Over 30 firefighters from FFD, White Haven, Hazle Twp., Nuremberg-Weston, and other Luzerne County departments began the PA Fire Academy/DOH BVRT class at FFD. Suburban Mutual Fire Aid Assn. is sponsoring the class which is being instructed by Kingston Fire Dept.

As is the tradition, FFD joined firefighters from Hazleton City and West Hazleton Boro in a combined marching unit in the Funfest parade. The engine also was in the event which was led by the 1960 FWD Engine from Diamond Engine Co.

The Late Summer Chicken Bar B Que was again a success with 250 dinners sold. The department members worked Friday night and Saturday to prepare the meals which have become a tradition with many on the Northside.
